Norcross High School (NHS) junior outfielder Griffin Helms has verbally committed to play baseball for Kennesaw State, according to NHS Athletics Director Kirk Barton.
Helms is a 6’0″ 205 pound catcher/outfielder who throws and bats right handed. He was also recruited by Georgia Tech and Auburn.
Here is what PerfectGame.org said about Helms in August of 2012
Thick barrel chested build, very good present strength. Righthanded hitter, big hand hitch start, strong enough to work through it, handles the barrel very well, can drive the ball to right field, hits under control, line drive approach, mature hitter, pull/lift ability to come with experience but has the bat speed/strength. Solid overall catching actions, stays compact and quick, accurate throws, athletic actions, 1.91 best pop. Also plays the outfield. Ran 6.61 earlier in the year, surprising speed for build/age. Solid all around athlete. Good student.
and in December 2011,
Extremely strong build for his age, very live bodied athlete. Right handed hitter, straight stance, short swing, solid swing mechanics, calm lower half, very strong hands generate bat speed, drives the gaps hard, squares up and handles the barrel, keeps it simple and hits under control, high ceiling hitting tools. Very good straight line runner, 6.61 in the 60, shows quickness behind the plate, good exchange, stays low and wide in his base, very compact arm action, arm strength still developing, 1.94 best pop time. Obviously has the athletic ability to play other positions if needed. Good student. Named to the Top Prospect Team.
If Helms is not drafted and doesn’t sign professionally, he will suit up for the Owls for the 2015 season. To read more on Helms, and view some video highlights, check out his PerfectGame.org player profile.
