Each March/April, College Basketball Insider Jeff Goodman prepares a list of players who have elected to transfer for the coming school year. Before the Owl Howl was created, I picked three names off of the list as players I believed that KSU should target: Willy Kouassi, Bernard Morena and Matt Stainbrook. Two of the three are now at Kennesaw State. I’ll try and repeat my magic again, JUCO style.
We know that the Owls are primed to make some noise in 2013 and 2014, which means JUCO players are the quickest route to turn this thing around. As we previously reported, KSU had 6’5″ guard Tanner Wozniak visit the school this past weekend. He’s a big guard, and that is a huge need for this team; the promising Jordan Montgomery is still developing.
Another area of need for the Owls might be point guard, or at least a smaller combo guard similar to Delbert Love. Yonel Brown hasn’t shown me enough at this point to call him the future solution. He’s a great teammate, a hard worker and I haven’t given up on him, but there’s no guarantee he will be ready to run the offense next year.
Keep in mind, the names I’m going to list are purely speculative. I have no idea if they are on the radar or not. I’m going strictly by the numbers and the small amount of highlights that are on the internet. JUCO numbers are usually inflated when compared with actual performance at the D1 level. It’s easier to predict D1 success from JUCO players rather than kids straight out of high school, but it’s far from a sure thing.
KSU tends to recruit from the following states: GA, FL, AL, OH, IN, VA, DC, TN, MD, NC, SC. Assuming grades are good, JUCO players are eligible to play immediately. Okay, enough with the talk, it’s time to throw some names at you!
1. Jordan Johnson | 5’11 | Sophomore | East Georgia College | Hinesville GA
Why: He is having an excellent season. He can obviously shoot the ball, if nothing else. He is from Georgia, albeit Hinesville which is much closer to Savannah/Jacksonville.
What they say: “Jordan Johnson is a scoring point guard who can really fill it up. Johnson has the ability to create his own shot especially getting by his defender and getting to the 10-15 area for the pull up. Johnson does a good job running the team on the offensive end.”
2. Marquis Barnes | 5’11 | Sophomore | Gordon State College | Buffalo NY
Why: Another guy who can shoot the ball. Playing ball under two hours away from Kennesaw.
What they say: “Barnes is a Vinnie Johnson type guard who scores in bunches and scores them quickly. Barnes averaged just over 15ppg last season for the Highlanders. He has spent the summer working on his handle and it truly showed at the Summer Shootout.”
3. Marshun Newell | 6’3 | Sophomore | Southwest Tennessee CC | Memphis
Why: Seems like the truest point guard on this blog post, as he averages 4.6 assists per game. He played a year with Nate Rucker in junior college.
Why not: Character issues.
4. Deville Smith | 5’10 | Sophomore | Southwest Mississippi CC | Jackson MS
Why: Played a year at Mississippi State, so has D1 experience. Was a four star recruit by Rivals when he came out of high school.
Why not: Grades. Possible health issues (headaches). Likely going high major.
5. Demarcus Robinson | 5’11| Sophomore | Snead St. CC | Jonesboro GA
Why: Atlanta area kid
