Roster Breakdown: Jacksonville has pretty much lost the amount of firepower that it returns, and that is not good coming from an 8-22 squad. They only return three key contributors, so the next men up are going to have to perform if they hope to stay out of the cellar.
Biggest Losses: The two biggest losses for Jacksonville are both from the Atlanta area: Aloys Cabell played his high school ball at Mays and Delwan Graham played his at Riverwood before transferring to Dunwoody.
Cabell is an especially upsetting loss for Jacksonville because he came on strong his sophomore season after a disappointing freshman year. He shot 40.8% from the three point line and scored over 12 points per game. Jacksonville might miss his shooting, but Kennesaw State surely won’t after he put up 16 and 24 in his efforts last season.
Graham played his final two years at Jacksonville after taking the junior college route following his freshman season at Louisiana State University. He posted nearly identical stat lines in his upperclassman years and gave the Dolphins 9 points and 6.6 boards per contest.
Biggest Addition: Javon Dawson recently got a hardship exemption after transferring from Utah, and should be playing big minutes right away. He will add some size next to Glenn Powell. He played 15 minutes per game for Utah last season and averaged 3 points and just over 2 rebounds.
Impact Freshmen: There appear to be some talented players in this group, but one thing that interests me is that their two freshman guards had decommitments from previous schools (Binghamton and Winthrop).
After looking at Jacksonville’s roster, two of their three returning core players are smaller guards which means it might be harder to fit 5’11” sharpshooter Marcellous Bell into the lineup this year. This is why we are going to choose Jarvis Haywood as our impact freshman.
Haywood reversed his decision to attend college at Winthrop in October of 2011, and the Dolphins cashed in on the Jacksonville native. He is a scorer by nature and has good size for a guard (6’4″), which should afford him more playing time than the diminutive Bell. Haywood also received interest from Virginia Tech, Clemson and College of Charleston.
Tyler Alderman and Kordario Fleming are both worth a look for the Dolphins as players off of the bench once the season begins.
Breakout Star: There really isn’t a candidate for this honor with Jacksonville returning just six players; three being established and three have shown little to nothing to this point. Keith McDougald and Russell Powell appear to be what they are going to be, solid contributors. We like forward/center Glenn Powell (no relation to Russell) as our breakout player of the year.
Glenn Powell has improved statistically in every area (sans free throw shooting) over the course of his three seasons. He plays big and showed he has a strong presence in the low block by shooting 56% last year, which was an 8% increase from his sophomore year.
We don’t expect Powell to become a world beater, but taking his totals up from 11 points and 6.5 rebounds per game to 13 and 8.5 wouldn’t be asking too much.
Analysis: The proud history of Jacksonville University is highlighted by the 2011 National Basketball Association Hall of Fame induction of Artis Gilmore, who graduated from JU 40 years earlier.
But we can’t live in the past, and Jacksonville is a program that is in some trouble this year. The fate of long time head coach Cliff Warren may be in the hands of his 2012 recruiting class. JU will more than likely be a cellar dweller once again, and be replaced by the ascending University North Florida as the hottest ticket in town (no offense Jaguars fans!).
