The Owl Howl: Who is Bakari Copeland?
Bakari Copeland: I’m a 6’5” 205 pound combo guard from Arabia Mountain High School in Lithonia Georgia. I averaged 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists per game while shooting 46% from three and 75% from the free throw line during my junior year. I play for Kingdom Elite in AAU and I’m a teammate of Solomon Mangham‘s.
The Owl Howl: Describe your game on both ends of the floor.
Copeland: Defensively, I’m normally guarding smaller guards because I’m pesky on defense, usually causing turnovers and I like the challenge of guarding the other team’s best player. Offensively, my biggest threat is three point shooting but I can get to the basket because of my size. I’m good at coming off of screens, and I can create my own shot off the dribble.
The Owl Howl: What attributes make you so successful?
Copeland: I have a really good work ethic, I workout 2-3 hours every day even during the school year. I’m a very coachable player and my love for the game makes me want to learn more about it and keeps me from being content.
The Owl Howl: What are you looking to improve on for your senior year?
Copeland: I’d like to improve my ball handling and rebounding.
The Owl Howl: Who are the biggest influences on your basketball career?
Copeland: My mom, dad and my sister because they bring me up and bring me down when it’s needed to keep me level headed. My high school coaches never let me think I’m better than I am. Also my AAU Coach.
The Owl Howl: What offers do you have right now and which schools are interested in you?
Copeland: Interest…Kennesaw St. of course. But other schools that are interested are Virginia Commonwealth, Jacksonville, Mercer, Georgia, Alabama, Georgia Southern, Charleston Southern, Wofford, Niagara, Tulane, Austin Peay, Chattanooga, Furman, Gardner-Webb, Radford and East Tennessee State. My offers are from Houston Baptist, Alabama A&M, Southern, Presbyterian, Savannah St. and UT-Martin.
The Owl Howl: What are your thoughts on KSU? Would you consider going if offered?
Copeland: Yes I would. If they offered that would definitely be my top choice. I visited a couple of weeks ago and I like the way that they are trying to turn their program around. I want to go to a school where I can make an impact on the program.
The Owl Howl: Who are your top few college choices as of now?
Copeland: Don’t really have any right now.
The Owl Howl: Do you have a dream school?
Copeland: Nope. Whatever school is the best fit for me, that’s my dream.
The Owl Howl: July is a busy month for coaches doing their scouting of AAU ball. It’s really the time to get noticed over the summer…how is that going for you so far?
Copeland: It’s going good so far. This is where I’ve been getting most of my offers. I’m trying to play my own game and not overdo anything.
The Owl Howl: What’s most important to you when looking for a school, both on and off the court?
Copeland: On the court: Somewhere I can make a big impact and play early. Off the court: I want a big academic program that has my major, because I want to be a mechanical engineer.
The Owl Howl: If you had to compare your game to any player, college or pro, who would it be and why?
Copeland: My coach always says Paul Pierce, but I don’t see it. I’ve never really compared myself to anybody because I play my own type of game.
The Owl Howl: That’s a very humble answer. Who is your favorite NBA team?
Copeland: Washington Wizards because of John Wall.
The Owl Howl: OK, so here it is, John Wall or MJ? You’re going on the record now.
Copeland: John Wall easily
