John Bednarowski of the Marietta Daily Journal reported on Thursday that David Dean is not a finalist for the head coaching position.
Dean seemed to be the favorite choice of most of the fans that I have spoken with over the past few weeks; however, I wouldn’t rule him out quite yet. Maybe this is just a conspiracy theory on my part, but if Dean is actually in heavy consideration, Kennesaw State would want to set a smokescreen. The head coaching hire will generate the most publicity since a month ago when football was officially announced, and the biggest buzzkill would be people already assuming Dean has the job. I can’t think of a better way to throw people off of the trail than to wait until the last minute to bring in a favorite candidate for an interview, but that’s all conjecture. Maybe Dean really isn’t in consideration anymore. The only person to know the answer to that question is Director of Athletics Vaughn Williams, and that answer is in the vault.
It’s obvious Dean is very interested in the job. Here’s what Dean told Bednarowski,
“I have a tremendous amount of interest in (the job),” Dean said Wednesday. “I’m from the Atlanta area and when it came about that they were getting a football program I thought it would be a great situation. I think it’s going to be a great diamond in the rough.
“But I was not asked to come and interview. Evidently, they had a different idea.”
Bednarowski also writes,
Dean said he was contacted by Kennesaw State athletic director Vaughn Williams a couple of weeks ago and was asked for the phone number of Valdosta State athletic director Herb Reinhard. Dean said Williams wanted to talk to Reinhard before talking any further with him. Dean said he hasn’t heard a word since.
