Tell the fans a little about yourself
I’m LaVon Long, and I’m a 6’6, 220lbs, wing forward. I will play for Oakland Mills High School this year and the Mid Atlantic Select AAU team. I spent three years at Mount Saint Joseph High School playing center. This season at Oakland Mills I will have the opportunity to play my game and show the versatility that I had the chance to show on the AAU circuit.
Also, my mom played for Vivian Stringer at Iowa and was First Team All-Big Ten.
How long have you been playing ball?
I’ve been playing as long as I can remember. My mom started me in sports when I was 3, and I played all sports until I was 12 and then I began to focus on basketball.
Tell me about your game, both offensively and defensively? What kind of player are you?
My versatility and IQ are my biggest assets on the court. I can handle the ball, pass with great vision, post up,hit from mid range, and behind the arc while finishing around and playing above the rim. On defense I can defend inside and out as well as rebound at both ends. I am working on everything on the court to become a complete player.
What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses right now?
My ability to rebound the ball and push from coast to coast with speed while being under control and using my great vision is my greatest strength. My greatest weakness is defending small but quick point guards, but I plan to improve on this as I continue to develop.
What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
I plan to spend a lot of time on my jump shot and ball handling before next season. I will also continue with strength and conditioning to become more explosive.
I’ve seen from your highlights that you have the ability to handle the basketball very well for somebody your size but also play down low. What position do you see yourself playing in college?
I see myself as a forward but more of a guard than a post player in college. Coaches are impressed with my ability to do both…I am being recruited as a match up problem.
Congratulations on being offered by Kennesaw State. Have you been for a visit yet or have one scheduled? What are your impressions so far?
I have not visited Kennesaw yet but will with my mom before the high school season starts….so far I have talked with the coaches and looked on the web. It looks like a nice campus with good fan support at the games.
Have you ever been down south to Atlanta?
I have been to Atlanta for basketball tournaments a few times..the weather was great!
What other schools have offered you so far that you are most interested in?
My top schools that have offered are Kennesaw, Rider, Siena, Loyola, and LIU. I also like Fordham and they have gotten in touch with me recently but have not offered yet.
Do you have a “dream school”?
No, I dont have a dream school. I just want to go where I am wanted and have the chance to play my game at a school with a good business program because I want to major in business with a minor in psychology.
Which college or pro player do you loosely compare your game to?
I have been told my game can be compared to LeBron James because of my combination of strength, speed, and versatility as well as my unselfish nature and will to do whatever it takes to win the game.
Which is your favorite NBA team and who is your favorite player, and why?
Miami Heat because they did it their way, and I like LeBron because he will sacrifice individual stats to reach team goals.
Thanks for your time, and good luck this year!
Thanks. It should be a fun season!
